2012 Channel 7 Brighton Jetty Classic
|
 |
|
Update (6 Feb): Thank you to those who entered the Channel 7 Brighton Jetty Classic (7BJC) 2012 Swims, for their support. Due to safety concerns with water quality and rough seas the 7 BJC Swim Safety Committee had to make the difficult decision to cancel the 2012 swim events. Your safety and the safety of our volunteers in the provision of the required water cover for this ocean swim were the most important factors in reaching this difficult decision.
Due to the massive amount of preparation to organise an event like the 7 Brighton Jetty Classic, it is not possible to re-schedule the 2012 Event to another date. The 7BJC is the major fundraiser for the Brighton Surf Life Saving Club (BSLSC), a 100% volunteer Club that has provided patrols on the Brighton Beach since 1952. The funds raised are used to purchase and maintain Surf Lifesaving equipment and the Clubhouse emergency facilities. In addition to the BSLSC benefiting from the 7BJC, over $5,000 (from $5 per swimmer entry) goes to the Charity or Community Club of your choice.
This year the 7BJC Swim incorporated the Rival Swimwear Pink Wave in support of Women's Breast Cancer. Each swimmer in the pink wave collected sponsorship to swim around the jetty. As a result we are very proud that over $9,000 has been raised for Women's Breast Cancer. It is our intention to incorporate the Rival Pink Wave with our regular Surf Club Swim. The Team Pink Swimmers will be notified separately of that DATE. Next year we hope to continue to support Women's Breast Cancer and also encourage other charities to come on board with similar promotions.
Running an event like the 7BJC involves a lot of work by a large number of our dedicated volunteers, so I would like to personally recognise this effort. There are also numerous costs incurred for things like the timing system (purchased from NZ), security, insurance, hire of PA system, marquees, cold rooms, etc., which still have to be paid for even though we were unable to hold the swim.
Whilst the "No Refund Policy" is included with the swimmer entry Terms and Conditions, the organising committee has met and decided to offer a $15.00 refund to any entrant for the 2012 7BJC. Naturally, if you would like to donate your entry fee to the Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, we would be very grateful.
The $15 refund has been calculated as follows:
Entry Fee $27.50 - less $5 donation to Club of Charity of Choice (this will still be honored) and less a further $7.50 contribution to operational costs incurred.
In order to receive the $15 refund, please write to: Secretary 7 Brighton Jetty Classic Swim - PO Box 10, Brighton SA 5048.
Please include your name, address, entry, your signature, or if U18yrs parent signature, the event/s you entered, and to enable us to electronically transfer your refund, your Bank Account including:
Account Name - BSB - Account Number.
CLUB 7 Membership: Swimmers that applied for the Inaugural Club 7 Membership by registering by 6th January to swim in the 2012 event, and did not receive their exclusive Club 7 shirt momento at the Carnival Presentation Stage in the Bank SA Tent on the day (Sunday 5th Feb), will have their Club 7 Shirts posted to them. nb: 7 swims need to be completed (a time registered) and on the Event records to be eligible the Club 7 membership,
NOTE: Those that believe they qualified this year with their registration but did not apply in time for the Event to order a Shirt, will be able to apply next year, by the deadline date set for the 2013 Event (check details when the 2013 7BJC is posted on the website in the lead up to the event).
As the swim was cancelled this year for safety concerns it has been decided that every entry to the 2012 Event will count as a successful completion of the course for future Club 7 membership qualification purposes.
Thank you again for your support of our event, and in 2013 we look forward to getting back to the beautiful weather and calm condition of the previous 6 years.
2012 Swimmer Prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd: The prizes donated as part of sponsorship from Channel 7, Coopers, Rival Swimwear, Event Cinemas & the Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, are to be distributed as the result of a random draw of each Age Group Wave. *Entries in the Open Events, Fast Lap were placed into their age group for the draw. Those winners will be notified this week and where to collect their prizes.
Chairman, Channel 7 Brighton Jetty Classic.
Update (6 Feb): Weather unfortunately proved our decision to be correct. For those wishing refunds, information will be available soon.
Update (8:56): Due to weather conditions and extremely poor water quality, the ASRL Safety panel has rules that the 2012 Brighton Jetty Classic Boat carnival will not be held.
Update (8:52): Due to weather conditions and extremely poor water quality, the safety panel has ruled that the 2012 Brighton Jetty Classic Swim is unable to be held. It is extremely unfortunate, however safety must dictate the operation of the event. There will still be a carnival atmosphere, so come down and party with the Channel 7 Home and away stars, various bands and acts, and all of our lifesavers. More information regarding the event will be released soon.
Update (7:56): Registrations will not open until after the swim safety committee meet at 9am. The 400m event has been deemed to be unsafe. However, a modified event may be run later in the day.
Due to Extreme weather the start of the Brighton Jetty Classic has been postponed. Further information will be available at 9am.
The boat carnival is still going ahead as planned. This will be exciting to watch.
The sculptures are still on display. The navy band is still in attendance, as are the Channel 7 home and away stars. So its all happening down here at the Brighton Surf Club, come on down, and be part of the excitement.
